The New J ersey Nets are a National Basketball Association team based in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Nets is one of the seven teams in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Basketball Association. The Franchise plays at Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, New jersey and wears jerseys of red, blue and white. The Nets was established in 1967 as part of the American Basketball Association. The team was known as New Jersey Americans; they played their first season in the Teaneck New Jersey Armory, before changing its name and location to long island and become the New York Nets. The Franchise was renamed to ‘'Nets'' to rhyme with two other professional sports team in New York , The New York Mets and New York Jets. During the summer of 1976, the ABA and NBA merged. As part of the merger agreement, four teams from the ABA , including the Nets joined the NBA. The Nets has won two championships with the ABA , one Division title with ABA and three Division title with NBA. The franchise has also won two Conference title in 2002 and 2003. One of the eleven original teams of the American Basketball Association, the Nets won two championships in the nine-year history of that league. During this time Julius Erving star forward led the team.

In the early 1990s the Nets fielded a young team that featured forward Derrick Coleman and guards Drazen Petrovic and Kenny Anderson. Guided by  former Detroit Pistons head coach Chuck Daly, the trio led the Nets to its first winning mark in seven years, a 43-39 record during the 1992-93. The franchise lost to the playoff in the first round. After the2000-01 season the Nets traded Marbury and several other players to the Phoenix Suns for guard Jason Kidd. In his first season with the team, Kidd led the franchise to their first NBA Finals appearance, where they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers. In 2005, after two disappointing seasons, the Nets acquired Vince Carter from Toronto Raptors in exchange for Alonzo Mourning. Teamed with Kidd Carter rallied the team from being more than 10 games out of the playoffs to gain the final seed in the Eastern Conference. The Nets started the 2005-06 season slowly, struggling to a 9-12 record in the first 21 games. Behind strong play by Carter, Kidd and Jefferson the team won the last 10 games. Some players currently in the Nets roster are Jason Collins Richard Jefferson, Vince Carter, Jason Kidd, Antoine Wright and Clifford Robinson to name a few.
